SECURAD
Monitored Retrievable Disposal of Civilian Nuclear Fuel
Securad's environmental project is a sustainable solution for the safe and long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel (nuclear waste) produced by electrical nuclear power plants (either Candu or PWR reactors) in deep geological structures and stable bedrock (Canadian Shield). Under strict automated monitoring, the stored material is fully retrievable for possible future recycling. This is called Monitored Retrievable Disposal (MRD) (copyright on the MRD label).
The Securad site will be close to the coastline and therefore accessible by sea, allowing the spent fuel to be transported to the site from the nuclear plants by waterways and by sea, thus providing a means of transportation with higher security and better safety than land transportation. The project allows immediate responsible action to remove without any further delay the inventory of civilian spent nuclear fuel that has now been accumulating for three decades next to the nuclear plants themselves in ways and locations not planned for initially and more often than not close to densely populated areas.
Securad offers the best and safest solution to the problem of the removal of the spent nuclear fuel that has been accumulating at Canadian civilian nuclear reactor sites and does so in a way that respects sustainable development. This Canadian repository could be in service before its American counterpart at Yucca Mountain.
